JANSMUSIC RECOMMENDED RECORDING

Nigel North: Bach on the Lute, Vol.3
Linn Records CKD 049

Suites for solo cello, BWV 1007, 1008 & 1010

As a closet cellist (very much closet, since I once had a try and couldn't work out how on earth one played the cello), I adore the Bach cello suites, and I am naturally wary of "arrangements" or alternative versions of works I know well.  However, I have to say this runs as a very close competitor to the recording on the original instrument.  Fabulous, beautiful recording!

Nigel North plays with wonderful sensitivity and depth.  He says himself, in the liner notes, that his intention is to keep to the original text, musical intention, and phrasing and articulation. The colours are very different - on a cello there is a different kind of intensity in the bow strokes - which means this recording affects my mood in a different way, more invoking me to stop what I'm doing and sit down with a glass of wine and relax into it.

Bach himself, when writing for the lute, simply transcribed other works of his. There were none of his own arrangements of these works surviving however. Nigel has managed to make them sound as though they were written for the lute all along.  It's a very full on sound, very intimate - you can hear the plucking of the strings clearly and the odd squeak of fingers, which I like very much, because you almost feel you're sitting in front of him, rather like you would sit and listen to a sitar player.

"What happened to Volumes 1 and 2?"  I hear you ask.  Well, I liked this one first, so you'll just have to come back for more....
