Once again I find myself recommending a period instrument performance, and one that really
makes me tingle.  I'm really recommending this recording because of one particular work, the Sonata in B flat, for 2 flutes. Being a flautist I guessed I am a little biased, but I have played these 3 tracks several times today.  

I'd never heard of Michel de la Barre until Nancy gave me a copy of her CD.  He was reputedly the best flautist of his time, roughly of the same period as Bach. The writing is very attractive and lyrical.  What is particularly striking about this recording/performance (bearing in mind I have no other to compare it to) is Nancy's completely laid-back way of playing.  There is no sense of urgency, even in the faster movements, which is one of the reasons why it is a joy to listen to.  There is also a sense of playing in an ensemble, and a lovely interaction between Nancy and the continuo instruments, such as in the C minor suite, where is a lovely "conversation" between her and the gambist, Erin Headley.

For the double flute sonata Nancy is joined by Elizabeth Walker.  This is a very simple work - the kind of thing all young flautists play together. It is played ever so gently, with just the right amount of breathy tone when needed, and delicate tonguing, and is an absolute delight to listen to. They also sound like they are really enjoying the dialogue together.  

One thing that it mentioned in the booklet notes is the use of the lower register by de la Barre.  I did in fact pick up on this - wondering if at one point Nancy was using an alto flute.  But apparently not, the composer simply chooses to explore the lower registers - very effective, very mellow and seductive.
