As a flautist myself I always wanted to play like this. I idolised James Galway all the way through my teens. To cut it short, I was never destined to play flute for England, but obviously Kathryn Thomas is, and I guess you could say she is everything I ever wanted to be. To add to my misery, this disc includes one of the pieces I played at my final recital at University, played in a manner I'm sure I never quite achieved.
This is a beautifully put-together disc of some lovely music. Producing a disc with one kind of repertoire, from a single composer, is a bit of a risk, the boredom factor destined to kick in at some point, but on this disc the music's so lovely that I think they get away with it, and you can't fail to be bowled over by Kathryn's pure breathy tone.
Gaubert is very French, very flowery, and very fluid, his quicker movements giving the soloist a chance to show off, and the slower movements letting the phrases bloom, and the whole sound just conjures up for me all those French impressionist paintings, poppies and fields, rustic and joyous - no wonder that's what they used for the cover!
Deux-Elles are a small new company, but already beginning to prove their worth, with some fantastic discs already in the catalogue and I hope to be able to bring them to your attention in due course.
