This CD explores the rarely-heard music of Salamone Rossi, who born in Mantua around 1570, and died around 1630.  He was an instrumentalist, composer and singer, employed at the Gonzaga court, working alongside such composers as Monteverdi. Rossi was a significant pioneer of the trio sonata, and is an important figures in Jewish music history.

The music on the CD ranges from Rossi's 1600 publication to his last in 1628.  Voices and instruments are mixed and matched, and women's voices sing the Hebrew texts.  Some trio sonatas are double variations of popular ground basses (Ruggiero, Romanesca), others delicate and virtuosic dialogues.  The 2-voice madrigaletti are exquisitely expressive cameos, and also included is one of the pieces with ritornelli, a small-operatic moment.
